Nothing is missing. Something is unplugged.
There is a dark spot in your week that nothing fills. Not the raise, not the plan, not the person who finally sees you. Nothing is missing. Something is unplugged.
In this twelfth layer of Layers Of Awakening, Erie goes back to the projector from the very first layer and walks around to the back of the machine. The lens is dark, the screen is dark, and in the middle of the picture there is a spot darker than dark that gives nothing back. It is not a hole. It is a socket with nothing in it. The cord lies on the floor, thin and gold, and it was pulled so long ago that you forgot it was ever in the wall. A Course in Miracles says the only lack you really need to correct is the sense of separation itself, and every other shortage is what that one looks like from the outside. No other machine can plug you in. The wall is behind you, and you are the only one in the room who can reach it.
Layers Of Awakening is a YouTube channel where Erie, a fictional guide, explains timeless public-domain books in a light, modern way. The first book is A Course in Miracles.

WHAT IS THE PRACTICE?
The next time not enough rises, do not name the thing you lack. Name the state. Say, silently, in your own words: This is not a shortage. This is a disconnection. Then take one breath, just one, and let it go toward the wall instead of toward the thing. That breath is the plug meeting the socket. Nothing is added to you in it. The light comes up from the inside of the machine.
THE LINE FROM THE BOOK
"A sense of separation from God is the only lack you really need correct."

The Illusion of Needs
QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Why does getting what I wanted never last?
Because the dark spot was never a hole. A hole would fill. It is a socket with nothing in it, and a socket cannot be filled from the front. The day the thing arrived and the feeling did not move was not a failure. It was the clearest proof that the shortage was never the problem. The connection was.
Is this saying money and time do not matter?
No. The breath adds nothing to your account and nothing to your day, and it was never meant to. What it changes is how those things look. With the dark spot on, everything reads as a shortage and you decide from fear. With the dark out, the same facts are still there, and you can look at each one and choose from a clear place.
What does A Course in Miracles mean by the only lack you need correct?
That every shortage you can name is one lack seen from the outside: the sense of being cut off from your source. Correct that one, and the others become plain facts to handle, not holes to fill. The same page says needs arise only when you deprive yourself, which is what pulling the cord and then asking other machines for light looks like.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
Once the light is back on, even for a breath, a sharper question appears. If nothing is missing, why do you keep running? Why does the machine, plugged in and glowing, still want the next upgrade? That is not the socket anymore. That is a wheel, and it has a rider. Layer 13 names the rider and watches the wheel stop: Why Does Winning Never Feel Like Enough?
TRANSCRIPT
You keep reaching for what is missing. Last time I promised to name the thing that swallows the light. Here it is. A black hole. Now look closer. It is not a hole. It is a socket with nothing in it. Nothing is missing. Something is unplugged. Today we find out what that dark spot is, why nothing you put into it ever stays, and the one small move that turns the light back on. Stay with me. By the end, the word enough will mean something different to you.
Look at the shape of an ordinary week. Something feels short. Not enough time, not enough money, not enough certainty, not enough of you. So you reach. The raise, the plan, the person who finally sees you, the sign from the universe. And here is the strange part. Sometimes it arrives. And there is a moment of light. A day, maybe a week. Then the dark spot is back, exactly where it was, and now it wants the next thing.
So you decide the problem was the size of the thing. You need more of it, or a better one. Or you decide the problem is you. That you are the kind of person who is never satisfied. Neither of those is true. Here is the relief, and I want you to take it slowly. Not enough is not a measurement. It is not the number in the account or the state of your life. It is a feeling, and a feeling has a source. And the source of this one is not out there, and it is not a flaw in you. It is a cord lying on the floor.
Let me show you. Go back to the very first layer. The projector. You are the projector, not the picture. Remember it. A clean machine, warm gold light, a whole world thrown onto the screen in front of it. Now picture it tonight. The lens is dark. The screen is dark. And there is a spot on the picture, right in the middle, that is darker than dark. It pulls the edges of the picture in toward itself and gives nothing back. That is the thing we are naming. That is the black hole.
Now walk around to the back of the machine. Follow the cord. It runs across the floor, thin and gold, and it ends in the air. Nobody cut it. It was pulled, so long ago that you forgot it was ever in the wall. This machine is not broken. It is not empty. It is not too small for the job. It is unplugged.
And watch what an unplugged machine does. It goes looking for power in the other machines in the room. It presses up against the next one, hoping to feel a hum. A person. A purchase. A plan. And for a moment there is a hum, because pressing against something feels like power. Then it fades, because that machine is unplugged too. Every one of them is. That is why nothing you put into the dark spot ever stays. A hole would fill. You can pour everything you own into a socket with nothing in it and it will be exactly as empty as it was, because it was never a hole. It was never asking for more. It was asking for the wall.
A Course in Miracles says this in one line, and it is on the screen now. Take it in slowly. A sense of separation from God is the only lack you really need correct. Not the only lack you have. The only one you need to correct. Every other shortage you can name is what that one lack looks like from the outside. The same page says something even stranger. Needs arise only when you deprive yourself. Not when the world deprives you. When you do. When you pull the cord and then stand in the dark asking the other machines for light.
And now I want to say one thing about the day it worked. The day the thing you reached for finally arrived, and you waited for the dark spot to close, and it did not move. That day was not a failure. That day was the clearest proof you have ever been given. It showed you that the socket cannot be filled from the front. Because here is the part that gives you your power back. No other machine can plug you in. Not the person, not the plan, not the sign. The wall is behind you, not in front of you, and you are the only one in the room who can reach it. That is not a burden. That is the end of waiting.
So here is the small thing to carry today. One line, one breath. The next time not enough rises, and it will, do not name the thing you lack. Name the state. Say, silently, in your own words: This is not a shortage. This is a disconnection. Then take one breath. Just one. And let it go toward the wall instead of toward the thing. That breath is the plug meeting the socket. Nothing is added to you in that breath. Nothing arrives from outside. The light comes up from the inside of the machine, the way a filament warms, and the dark spot in the picture is simply not there anymore, because it was never a thing. It was the shape of a missing connection.
That breath will not add a single hour to your day. It will not put anything in your bank account. It will not hand you the certainty you were reaching for, and it will not make more of you. It was never meant to. What it changes is the way you look at these things. When the dark spot is on, the time, the money, the not knowing, and you yourself all look like shortages, and you decide from fear. Take the dark out first, and the same things are still there, as plain facts, and you can look at each one and choose what to do about it from a clear place.
In the comments below, tell me the one thing you keep reaching for. That is the layer we start with.
And once the light is back on, even for a breath, a sharper question appears. If nothing is missing, why do you keep running? Why does the machine, plugged in and glowing, still want the next upgrade, the next version of you? That is not the socket anymore. That is a wheel. It turns whether or not the light is on, and it has a rider who believes it is going somewhere. A Course in Miracles knows that rider by name, and next time we watch the wheel stop. That is where we go next.
