Who Told You to Make Your Own Light?

You have spent years trying to make yourself clear, and nobody ever asked you to. You are not the light. You are the glass.

In this eleventh layer of Layers Of Awakening, Erie sets a clear prism on a table in a dark room and lets one white beam cross it. The glass makes nothing. It only lets the light pass, and the colors were inside the light all along. Then the glass gets clouded, with dust, old fingerprints, every lesson you drew after you got hurt, and the beam arrives exactly as bright but less of it comes through. A Course in Miracles says the move is not to think better. It is to stop using what you learned before as your light. Your job was never to make peace. It is to keep the glass clear.

Layers Of Awakening is a YouTube channel where Erie, a fictional guide, explains timeless public-domain books in a light, modern way. The first book is A Course in Miracles.

WHAT IS THE PRACTICE?

The next time you catch yourself trying to be clear, stop. Do not fight the cloudy feeling and do not think harder at it. Say three short things, silently, in your own words: I do not know what this means. So I do not know how to respond yet. And I am not going to use my old lessons to decide. Then take one breath. That breath is the clear face of the prism. A clear mind is not an empty mind. You are only setting down a tool that was not built for this, your old lessons, for the length of one breath.

THE LINE FROM THE BOOK

"I do not know what anything, including this, means. And so I do not know how to respond to it. And I will not use my own past learning as the light to guide me now."

The Test of Truth

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Does keeping the glass clear mean I stop thinking?

No. A clear mind is not an empty mind and you are not going blank. For the length of one breath you set down one tool, your old lessons, and let what is arriving pass through. The thoughts come back, they always do, and they come back to a clearer glass.

Why does trying harder make things dimmer?

Because every effort to make yourself clear adds one more layer to the glass: a rule, a method, a better thought. The light arrives exactly as bright as before, but less of it passes through. The clouded glass does not need more light. It needs less on it.

What does the prism have to do with my mind?

The prism is the mind, the white light is what was given to you before you learned anything, and the layers on the glass are your lessons. The prism never made a single color and never tried. It only let the light pass. That is the whole job, and it is smaller than the one you gave yourself.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

If the light was never weak, why are there days when nothing arrives at all? Not cloudy. Dark. Days when the mind feels unplugged and no breath brings it back. That is not a scratched prism. It has a shape, and A Course in Miracles knows it well. Layer 12, Nothing Is Missing. Something Is Unplugged, gives the thing that swallows the light its name.

TRANSCRIPT

You have spent years trying to make yourself clear. You were never asked to. You are not the light. You are the glass.

Somewhere along the way you took a job nobody gave you. The job of making your own light. Making your own peace. Making your own clarity, one careful thought at a time. And the harder you work at it, the dimmer things get.

Today we find out who handed you that job, why it can never work, and what a piece of glass knows that you forgot. Stay with me. By the end of this, you will put something down that you did not know you were carrying.

Last time, you walked around a carved face and found a flame behind it. And you saw that the flame behind their mask and the flame behind yours were never two. One light, shining through different windows.

So here is the question that opens today. If it is one light, why does your window so often feel dark? Why does clarity feel like something you have to work for? Look at what you actually do when your mind feels cloudy. You think harder. You try to think a better thought. You tell yourself to calm down. You try to let go, and then you try to let go of the trying. You go through one more book, one more method, hoping this one finally makes you clear.

And every single thing you add is another layer on the glass. That is the trap. You are trying to manufacture peace. And peace is not manufactured. It is not something you make. It is something you stop blocking.

Here is the relief, and I want you to hear it slowly. The light was never weak. You are not broken. You have simply been polishing the wrong side of the glass, adding rules and old lessons to a lens that only ever needed to be cleared.

Let me show you. Picture a room with no windows. Dark, still, quiet. On a table in the middle of the room sits a clear glass prism. Three faces, edges as sharp as a thought. It does nothing. It has nothing of its own. No color, no glow, no power. Just glass.

Now a single beam of white light enters the room. Thin, steady, silent. It travels across the dark and touches the near face of the prism. And on the far side, something happens that the glass did not do. The white light opens. It spreads into a fan of color. Red, gold, green, indigo, purple. Every color was already inside the white light. The prism did not make a single one. It did not try. It did not decide which color to show. It only let the light pass, and the light did the rest.

Now watch what happens when the glass is not clear. Scratch it. Cloud it. Layer it with dust, with old fingerprints, with everything that touched it in the past. The beam still arrives, exactly as bright. But less of it passes through. The colors blur. And here is what nobody tells you. The clouded glass does not need more light. It needs less on it. Nothing has to be added to that prism to bring the colors back. Only taken off. Only cleared.

The prism is your mind. The white light is what was given to you before you learned anything at all. The layers are your lessons. Every conclusion you drew about yourself. Every rule you made after you got hurt. Every clever way you learned to stay safe. You did not build them to hurt yourself. You built them out of your own experience. But they sit on the glass, and the light has to push through all of them to reach you.

So who told you to make your own light? Nobody, actually. Nobody ever said it out loud. It was quieter than that. Every time you got hurt and decided you would understand things better next time, you took a little more of the job. Every time you promised yourself you would see that coming, you added a rule. And rules feel like clarity. They feel like wisdom. That is why you keep them. But look at what they are. Every rule is the past, telling the present what it means.

A Course in Miracles names this in a single move, and it is on the screen now. Take it in slowly. The move is not to think better. The move is to stop using what you learned before as your light. Not because your past taught you nothing. It is because your past already happened, and what has already happened cannot show you the present. It can only tell you what the last hurt looked like, and call that seeing.

I want to know where this lands in your life. In the comments below, tell me one thing you have been trying to think your way out of. One thing you have been working at with your mind, the way you would work at a stuck lock. That is the layer we start with. I go through every one of them.

Sovereignty is this. You stop being the maker of your own light. That was never your job, and you were never good at it, and that is not an insult. Nobody is good at it, because it cannot be done. Your job is smaller, and far more powerful. Keep the glass clear. That is it. You do not have to produce peace. You do not have to earn clarity. You only have to stop adding to the glass, and the light, which was never yours to make, does what it has always done. It passes through.

So here is the small thing to carry today. The next time you catch yourself trying to be clear, and you will catch it now, because you know what it looks like, stop. Do not fight the cloudy feeling. Do not think harder at it. That only adds a layer. Instead, say three short things, silently, in your own words: I do not know what this means. So I do not know how to respond yet. And I am not going to use my old lessons to decide.

Then take one breath. Just one. That breath is the clear face of the prism. In that one breath you are not making anything. You are not solving anything. You are letting something pass through you that has been waiting at the glass the whole time.

And a word of care, because I care how you hear this. A clear mind is not an empty mind. You are not switching your thoughts off. You are not going blank. You are only setting down a tool that was not built for this, your old lessons, for the length of one breath. The thoughts can come back. They will. But they come back to a clearer glass.

And once you feel the light pass through you, even once, a harder question shows up. If the light was never weak, if it has been arriving this whole time, then why are there days when nothing arrives at all? Not cloudy. Dark. Days when the mind feels unplugged, when you reach for the light and your hand comes back with nothing, and no breath and no clearing seems to bring it back. That is not a scratched prism. That is something else. It has a shape, and A Course in Miracles knows it well.

You are not the light. You never were. You are the glass. And next time, we give the thing that swallows the light its name. That is where we go next.
