Why Does Their Mask Look So Real?

There is a light in the person who hurt you that their worst moment never touched. You have never seen it, because you have been looking at the mask.

In this tenth layer of Layers Of Awakening, Erie shows you a face carved in dark stone, set into an old gate, cold and solid for as long as anyone can remember. Behind it, unseen from the front, a single flame has been burning the whole time. A Course in Miracles says what God created in a person is never harmed, not by what they did to you, not by what they did to themselves. This is not about excusing anyone, calling anyone, or going back. You can see a person's innocence from across a canyon and stay exactly as far away as your peace requires. You are not letting them back in. You are letting yourself out.

Layers Of Awakening is a YouTube channel where Erie, a fictional guide, explains timeless public-domain books in a light, modern way. The first book is A Course in Miracles.

WHAT IS THE PRACTICE?

The next time someone's face rises in your mind, do not argue with the mask. Look behind it. And say, silently, without needing to feel it yet: "I choose to see the light in you, and in your innocence I find my own." You do not have to mean it all the way. You do not have to tell them.

THE LINE FROM THE BOOK

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Does seeing the light in someone mean I have to forgive them and go back?

No. Erie says it in the video: you can see a person's innocence from across a canyon and stay exactly as far from them as your peace requires. Seeing the flame behind the mask changes what you are looking at, not where you stand. You are not letting them back in. You are letting yourself out.

Why does the mask look so real if it is not the whole of them?

Because it was really cut. The anger, the betrayal, the cold turn away were real acts, and standing in front of them in the dark you were not wrong to see a wall. The mask is real. It is only not solid, and it was never the whole of them. The coldness was in the direction you were looking from.

What is the difference between the mask and the flame?

The mask is the worst thing a person did, painted over their whole face. The flame is what the book says was never harmed in them, not by what they did to you and not by what they did to themselves. Their cruelty was the shadow side of a flame they had forgotten how to carry. A shadow means something is casting it, and that something is untouched.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

The flame behind their mask and the flame behind yours were never two. They are one light, shining through different windows. So if your mind is not a wall but a pane of glass, what happens when the glass goes cloudy? The next layer, Who Told You to Make Your Own Light?, opens there.

TRANSCRIPT

There is a light in the person who hurt you and you have simply never seen it. Not because it isn't there, but because you have been looking at the mask. The face they showed you. The anger, the betrayal, the cold turn away. It looks so solid. It looks like the whole truth of who they are.

Today we find out why that mask looks so real, and what is standing behind it that you were never shown how to see. Stay with me. This is the moment the face of your enemy begins to change.

Last time, you opened a sealed drawer and read the deed to your own worth. You saw that it was never in debt, never up for debate. Sealed by God and closed for good. And something in you finally rested. But the ego does not rest. It cannot call you worthless anymore, so it turns and points across the room. Fine, it says. Perhaps you are sealed. But look at them. Look at what they did. And just like that, you are working again. Only now the labor is a case.

You gather their mistakes, you paint their whole face with the worst thing they ever did, and you call that painting their reality. It is exhausting to hate someone well. And here is the trap hidden inside it. Every time you make them guilty, you make the separation real, and you lock your own gate from the inside.

Now here is the relief. You do not have to fix them. You do not have to go back. You do not have to call what happened acceptable. This was never about them at all. It is about what you are finally willing to see.

Let me show you how a thing can look solid and not be. Picture a face carved in dark stone. A stern face, weathered and cold, the kind you would swear is solid rock, hard all the way through, its coldness simply what it is. For as long as anyone can remember, that is all it has seemed to be.

But behind the carved face, unseen from the front, a single flame has been burning the whole time. The stone was never solid. It is thin as a shell and the darkness was only the side you had been standing on. Let that flame rise, even a little, and the whole face changes. It glows from within. Warm. Lit. Every line the chisel cut now carries light instead of shadow. The carving has not changed. The coldness has. It was never in the stone. It was in the direction you were looking from. You had been standing in front of the mask. You had never once walked around to the flame.

That carved face is every person you have called an enemy. The mask is real. It was really cut, and standing in front of it in the dark, you were not wrong to see a wall. But it was never solid, and it was never the whole of them. The old teaching says it in a single line, and it is on the screen now. Read it slowly. Behind the face they turned to you, the thing God created in them was never harmed.

Not by what they did to you. Not by what they did to themselves. Their cruelty was the shadow side of a flame they had forgotten how to carry, a blind reach for the very love they were refusing. That does not make the shadow pretty. It makes it a shadow, which means there is something casting it. And that something is untouched. I want to know where this meets your life.

In the comments below, name one person whose mask you are willing, just willing, to look behind. Not to excuse them. Not to call them. Only to wonder, for one honest second, what the flame behind that face might be. Lay the name down here. That is sovereignty. You stop being the prisoner of a face.

Seeing the light in someone does not mean standing where you were hurt. You can see a person's innocence from across a canyon and stay exactly as far from them as your peace requires. You are not letting them back in. You are letting yourself out.

So here is the small thing to carry. The next time someone's face rises in your mind, do not fight the image. Do not argue with the mask. That only presses you harder against the stone. Just do the one quiet thing almost no one thinks to do. Look behind it. And say, silently, without needing to feel it yet: I choose to see the light in you, and in your innocence I find my own.

You do not have to mean it all the way. You do not have to tell them. The light does not need your certainty. It only needs you to stop staring at the shadow. And the first time you truly see it, one flame behind one face, something strange and beautiful happens. You realize it was the same fire. The flame behind their mask and the flame behind yours were never two. They are one light, shining through different windows.

Which raises the last question we open next. If your mind is not a wall but a pane of glass, if the light is meant to pass straight through you and out into the world, what happens when the glass goes cloudy, and what would it mean to let the light come through you clean and unbroken? That is where we go next.
