The static is not the station.
You cannot make the loud voice stop. You were never asked to. The static is not the station, and the dial was always in your hand.
In this fourteenth layer of Layers Of Awakening, Erie walks into a deep indigo room where an old valve radio glows on a table, one round glass dial lit gold. What comes out of it is static: loud, close, fast, and it talks. Under the static there is a station that has been playing the whole time, steady, with no hurry in it. A Course in Miracles names them both: the static is the ego, which always speaks first, and the station is the Voice for God, the guide that was placed in you and never left. You were tuned to the loud one because it shouts and because it got there first. The dial is your choice, and the hand on the dial is you.
Layers Of Awakening is a YouTube channel where Erie, a fictional guide, explains timeless public-domain books in a light, modern way. The first book is A Course in Miracles.

WHAT IS THE PRACTICE?
The next time the loud voice arrives first, and it will arrive first, do not argue with it and do not obey it. Say, silently, in your own words: Something quieter is also speaking. Then take one breath, and let your attention drop under the noise. That is the whole practice. You are not silencing anything. You are turning the dial.
THE LINE FROM THE BOOK
"It does not overcome, because it does not attack. It merely reminds."

The Voice for God
QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Why can I never tell which voice is me?
Because one of them is loud and gets there first, and speed sounds like sense. The loud voice has reasons, and the reasons are good, so you called it logic and called the quiet one a feeling. Neither label was true. The loud one is the near one, not the true one; the quiet one knew something, said it once, and went under the noise.
Do I have to make the loud voice stop?
No, and you cannot. Breathing at it, counting at it and telling it to be quiet all use the loud voice to fight itself, which is why it gets louder. The practice does not silence anything. It turns the dial: the static keeps playing somewhere, the way a radio does when you move off a station, and it is simply not what you are tuned to.
What does A Course in Miracles mean by the Voice for God?
The guide that was placed in you and never left. The book describes it by what it does not do: it does not command, it does not demand, it does not overcome, it merely reminds. That is how you tell the two apart. The voice that pushes is the static; the voice that reminds, once, without a deadline, is the station. Nobody is asked to hear a sound. What the station gives you is a knowing that arrives whole and does not argue.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
Once you can find the station, watch what the mind does next: it goes looking for something to put in the station's place. A person who sounds that calm, a plan that promises that peace, a thing gold and heavy that seems to give it. Layer 15 finds out why not one of them holds: What were you really reaching for?
TRANSCRIPT
Fear speaks first. It is not the only one speaking.
Last time the wheel stopped, and for the first time in years the room went quiet. And in the quiet there was something under the noise. Today you find out what was under it. And I want to give you the relief first, because you have been blaming yourself for the wrong thing. You have not been failing to find your guidance. You have been trusting the wrong voice, and it was easy to do, because the wrong voice is the loud one. The static is not the station. Stay with me. By the end of this you will know how to tell them apart, and you will not need to make the loud one stop.
Think of the last decision you could not make. Not the small ones. The one you turned over for weeks. Two voices, and you could not tell which one was you. One of them was loud. It spoke first, it spoke fast, and it sounded like sense. Hurry. Protect yourself. Do not trust it. What if. It had reasons, and the reasons were good. The other one was quiet. It did not argue. It did not have a case. It simply knew something, and it said it once, and then it was gone under the noise. So you did what anyone would do. You called the loud one me, and logic, and you called the quiet one a feeling, and you did what the loud one said.
And when that hurt, you tried the other way. You tried to make the loud voice stop. You breathed. You counted. You told it to be quiet. And it got louder, because you were using it to fight itself. Here is what neither of those could do. Neither of them moved the dial. You argued with the noise, or you obeyed it, and either way you stayed tuned to it. A Course in Miracles says the ego always speaks first. Not that it is right. That it is first. Speed is the whole trick of the loud voice, and speed is not a credential.
Let me show you. Walk into the room. It is dark here, deep blue, the blue of the last minute before night. On a table there is an old radio. Warm valves glowing behind the grille, one round glass dial lit gold, the only warm light in the room. Notice what comes out of it. Static. Loud, close, restless, and it talks. You know this voice. We met it in the second layer, the defending voice, and it has one message in a thousand shapes: you are not safe. It has been playing so long that you thought static was all this radio could do.
Now go under it. Do not strain. Let your attention drop below the noise. There is a station. Steady. No hurry in it. It says almost nothing, and what it says it has been saying the whole time. It did not start when the wheel stopped. You started noticing it when the wheel stopped, because the wheel was louder. Now here is the part everyone misses. The station never went anywhere. The dial was on the static. You were tuned to the loud one, and you were tuned to it because it shouts, and because it got there first.
That is all the loud voice has. It is not the true one. It is the near one. And now you can name them. The static is the ego. The station is the voice that A Course in Miracles calls the Voice for God, the guide that was placed in you and never left. The dial is your choice. And the hand on the dial is you.
A Course in Miracles describes that guide in four lines, and the last two are on the screen now. The Voice of the Holy Spirit does not command, because it is incapable of arrogance. It does not demand, because it does not seek control. It does not overcome, because it does not attack. It merely reminds. Take that in slowly, because it is all you will ever need to tell them apart. The voice that pushes is the static. The voice that reminds is the station. Fear commands. Fear demands. Fear attacks, and calls the attack protection. The guide does none of that. It reminds you of what you already know, once, without a deadline, and it does not raise its voice when you ignore it. The same page says the Voice for God is always quiet, because it speaks of peace.
Now, the radio is a picture. Nobody is asked to hear a voice. What the station gives you is a knowing, a quiet certainty that arrives whole and does not argue. You recognize it by what it does, not by a sound. So here is what is true. You cannot make the static stop, and you were never asked to. It keeps playing somewhere for as long as the ego has a room to play in. You are simply not tuned to it. The dial was always in your hand. Turning it costs nothing, changes nothing out there, and it is the only move in the room that was ever yours.
So here is the small thing to carry today. One line, one breath. The static keeps going for a moment, the way a radio does when you move off a station, and then it is simply not what you are tuned to.
In the comments below, tell me the decision you are stuck on right now. That is the layer we start with.
And once you can find the station, watch what the mind does next, because it is quick. It goes looking for something to put in the station's place. A person who sounds that calm. A plan that promises that peace. A thing, gold and heavy, that seems to give it. Something you can hold, so you do not have to listen. A Course in Miracles has an old word for those, and it is not a gentle one: idols. Next time we find out why not one of them holds, and why the one that let you down was never the problem. That is where we go next.
